Field Project

The brief for this project was the city of Cardiff! Not the most original brief but it allowed for a broad spectrum of ideas. After much consideration I decided to base my project on Llandaff Cathedral, in particular it’s Stained Glass Windows as I felt that generally in Cathedrals the windows create a really enchanting and peaceful atmosphere.

For one of my final pieces, I painted on panes of glass with glass paint to replicate the effect of the Stained Glass Windows that were in the Cathedral. I painted them with imagery from the Cathedral and projected light through them so that they reflected onto the wall. This was inspired by my manifesto project that I had done earlier that year. I really enjoyed using light effects as part of my art and I would like to do more with this in the future. I was pleased with the outcomes for this part of my project and I loved the slightly fuzzy projections!

For the second part of my project I decided to produce a series of drawings inspired by the Cathedral. At first I started using collage and overlaid imagery from the Cathedral. This ended up being quite limited as it did not inspire me to create anything else. To gain some inspiration I played around with my photographs of my glass projections on Photoshop and produced some rather interesting images! I looked at some Cubist work and that of David Hockney’s to give me some ideas as my projections were quite distorted like their artwork. As a result of this I managed to create some more interesting drawings.

Life Drawing

These are some of my favourite life drawings of last year!

Manifesto!

This next project was a group based project and for me, it was an extension of my ‘colour and line’ project. As a group we focused on trying to create a space. Our main idea was to use lights and string to create shadows of which we painted the ‘spaces’ that they created. We used all different colours to do this and painted the string that crossed in its complementary colour. I think that this worked really well, but I think that it would have looked far more impressive if we had done it on a larger scale and possible taken more care  with the painting!

We also produced a second piece for this project and came to this idea by complete accident! We started experimenting with using the light from the over-head projector and reflecting colours onto the walls. This was not working as well as we hoped and then one member of the group spilt coloured water onto the projector! This lead to us taking this further and we started to drop bits of food colouring into the water to create patterns. This looked really effective and most of the patterns looked a but like cells! We finally decided to make a short film of us creating these patterns and projected it onto the wall at the exhibition.

Live Notation

This was my second project of my first year and it was a bit of a challenge for me as it was completely out of my comfort zone! This project’s main aim was to think about drawing in a different way. To draw what we feel, hear and sense and not just what we see. At first I found this concept quite strange but after a while I began to enjoy and even like some of the ‘scribbles’ that I was producing! This idea of ‘live notation’ continued into group work where we had to produce pieces of art ‘in the moment’. This was a way of taking all of the control out of what we produced.

My favourite piece that we made ended up looking like a load of smudges! First of all, in pairs, we tied our wrists together and both tried to draw on the large sheet of paper. This was a really good idea and we all ended up fighting for space. Once we had all done this, we put the paper on the floor, scattered pieces of charcoal on it and danced around creating marks with our feet! This was by far the most successful of the many pieces that we produced as a group as all of the marks created were completely random. It was nice to not care about how something was going to turn out and to just experiment.

Creating Space through Colour and Line

This was my first and probably favourite project of my first year. It was all about how colours interact and affect each other and how we can use them in art to create depth and contrast. The first thing that we did for this project was to draw a construction of various items, such as poles, tape, rope and tables that was made by my tutor. At first we just used black paint and began to draw the shapes and spaces that we saw, rather than the actual object itself. We then progressed onto using complementary and similar colours. I was particularly interested in drawing the negative space of the construction and continued this into further drawings of mine. I loved how drawing the negative spaces of things really makes you study the object, probably in more detail than if you were drawing the positive space.

Another part of this project was to keep a ‘colour diary’. This was really fun and interesting to complete. It was made up of all random things like bits of coloured paper, sweet wrappers and just anything that had an interesting colour. This diary was a great way of thinking about the colours that we use and just realising how many different tones and shades of each colour there are!

BA(Hons) Fine Art Year1

Well, I really should have started this blog thing last year, but better late than never! I am currently in my second year at Cardiff Metropolitan University studying Fine Art. Its going really well and I am going to start this blog by sharing what I did last year!
